Medical Physics
Medical Physics
Broadly speaking Medical Physics provide scientific and technical support to diagnostic imaging services within AMNCH. In particular Medical Physics are primarily responsible for radiation protection and X-Ray quality assurance services within the Radiology department. These responsibilities extend to any area in the hospital using ionising radiation. Medical Physics also manage the radiopharmacy and support imaging facilities within Nuclear Medicine. AMNCH is a major teaching hospital and Medical Physics are involved in a range of courses.
Radiation Protection Services
Radiation protection support involves provision of the full range of services necessary for the safe use of ionising radiation within the hospital environment. These services include advice on compliance with legislation, staff and patient safety, personnel dosimetry and equipment quality control. In particular they include:
Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA) Service
Liaison with Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland
Room planning and advice on new/modified radiation facilities
Advise on the procurement and management of radiological equipment
Advice on local rules
Dose calculations and advice on radiation monitoring and measurement
Investigation of radiation incidents
Management of centralised radioactive waste
Contamination surveys of nuclear medicine areas
Dose surveys of areas adjacent to X-Ray use
Clinical Engineering
Clinical Engineering has responsibility for all electromedical equipment within the AMNCH – except for Nuclear medicine and Imaging (Medical Physics). We provide a wide range of medical equipment support including: equipment planning; technical evaluation and assessment; pre-purchase consultation; incoming inspection; equipment repair; performance assurance and preventive maintenance; modification; upgrading; medical equipment and technology education; broad-based medical device technology consultation; incident investigation; and hazard and recall notice distribution, tracking, and follow-up. Medical device management is achieved through our AIMS Database.
The staff of Clinical Engineering also provide specialised medical equipment support for:
- Hemodialysis
- Intensive Care Unit
- Theatres
- Cornary Care Unit
- Endoscopy
