Physiotherapy

About Us

Chartered Physiotherapists use mainly physical techniques e.g. exercise, manipulation, mobilisation, massage and electrical modalities to help restore well-being to people following injury, pain or disability.

The physiotherapy department provides both an inpatient and outpatient service to patients referred by their Consultant teams.  Services are divided into a number of areas of specialisation each headed by a Senior Physiotherapist. The Department has strong links with Trinity College Dublin and offers clinical placements for their students

Frequently Asked Questions

How will I be contacted with my appointment details?

The physiotherapy receptionist will contact you when your name moves to the top of the waiting list. You will be facilitated as far as possible with your preference for a morning / afternoon appointment or for a particular day. If you are not contactable by telephone, you will be sent a letter asking you to contact the department so that an appointment time can be arranged.  If you have a mobile phone and the number is on the hospital system with your other details, you will receive a text reminder of your appointment 2-3 days in advance.

What do I do when I arrive in the department?

Please check in with the physiotherapy receptionist. She will direct you to the waiting area where you may take a seat.

Will I be seen on time?

Yes, we work to appointment times so you will be seen at the allotted time. If you have been waiting for ten minutes without an explanation, please make your presence known to one of the staff.

How long will the appointment take?

Most appointments are for 30 minutes, but it may vary with certain conditions.

Some appointments including those referred from the Emergency Department are 15minutes

What should I wear?

You will have a thorough assessment to determine the cause of your complaint. The physiotherapist will need to examine your posture and movement and will ask you to expose the affected part of your body. You may prefer to bring shorts or loose clothing if you are attending with a back, hip or knee problem.

Do I need to bring anything else?

Please bring a list of any medication you are on, and reading glasses if required to fill out questionnaires.

What should I do if I cannot attend an appointment?

Please contact the department (tel no. 4142750) as soon as you become aware that you will not be able to keep the appointment. It is important to give us at least 24 hours notice so that we may offer the appointment to someone else. If you cancel two appointments without giving sufficient notice or do not attend for two appointments without giving us advance notice, you will be discharged.
