The Adelaide and Meath Hospital, Dublin Incorporating the National Children’s Hospital welcomes new Board Structure
The Board of the Adelaide and Meath Hospital, Dublin Incorporating the National Children’s Hospital met on 30th September and agreed a new Board structure. The first meeting of the Transitional Board took place on 28th October, 2010.
The Transitional Board consists of ten members as follows:
Chairman of the Hospital Board - Mr Lyndon McCann
Acting Chief Executive Officer - Mr John O’Connell
One nominee from each of the nominating organisations:
- The President of the Hospital - Venerable David Pierpoint
- The Adelaide Society - Prof Ian Graham
- The Meath Foundation - Ms Mairead Shields
- National Children’s Hospital Foundation - Dr Basil Elnazir
- TCD – Professor Joe Barry
A staff representative: Mr Colm O’Cleirigh and Mr Broc Delaney rotating every three months Three persons representing:
- Patient interests - Mr Stephen McMahon
- Quality Control / Safety expertise – Mr William McKee
- Business expertise and financial skills – Mr Liam Dowdall
Speaking about the developments, the Chairman of the Hospital Board, Mr Lyndon McCann said, “I am very pleased to announce the new structure. I am also pleased to welcome such high-calibre members into the new structure. We will continue to advance our work to bring world class quality healthcare and hospital services to our patients and their families.”
Biography on the new Board members
William McKee
William McKee has had a distinguished career in the healthcare leadership. Mr McKee was the chief executive of the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust, the largest Trust in the UK employing 22,000 people with an annual budget in excess of £1 billions. It was established in April 2007 following the merger of six previous Trusts. William McKee was previously chief executive of the Royal Hospitals comprising the Royal Victoria, Royal Maternity, and Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children.
Stephen McMahon
Mr McMahon is Chairman and co-founder of the Irish Patients Association (IPA), based in Dublin. Since its inception the IPA had played an important role in pioneering patient advocacy. The IPA listens and learns from the many experiences of patients, their families and careers; helps resove their issues bringing their problems to the fore. The ultimate goal of the Association is world class, patient centred healthcare system that is built on patients rights, responsibilities and trust. Mr McMahon is a Board member and Executive committee member of the International Alliance of Patients Organisations (I.A.P.O) a global voice for patients advocating patient centered care for over 60 countries. He is also a member of the outgoing Irish Council for Bioethics, and has served as the Delegate on a Council of Europe expert group on Media and Health. Stephen also has wide business experience having worked for 30 years for a multinational oil company.
Mr Liam Dowdall
Mr Dowdall is a chartered accountant of many years’ experience, specialising in insolvency and corporate recovery. He is currently with Smith and Wiliamson Freaney Accountants where he is a Director and Head of its Restructuring and Recovery Department. Mr Dowdall was with BDO Simpson Xavier where he was partner in charge of the Corporate Advisory and Recovery Department from 1997.
