Micro Scooters Fleet Help Children Overcome Fear of Operating Theatre

Two children’s hospitals in Ireland were treated to a brand new fleet of Micro Scooters today- Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children, Crumlin and The National Children's Hospital, Tallaght.

The National Children’s Hospital will be using the scooters to encourage children well enough to do so, to ‘scoot’ to the operating theatre. This helps to alleviate some of the anxiety and stress children commonly experience before an operation.

Children find the prospect of surgery daunting. So, instead of being wheeled on a trolley to the operating theatre, the scooters will help to make the experience more fun.

The Physiotherapy Department will also use the Micro Scooters to help in the rehabilitation of children who need to improve their strength and balance after injuries such as fractures, sprains and dislocations. The Micro Scooters will also be beneficial in the treatment of children with dyspraxia and other co-ordination and balance difficulties.

Micro Scooters help the children with their balance, motor skills and fitness levels without them realising they are going through treatment. Rehabilitation can be a painful process for some youngsters so the scheme has been welcomed by the hospital’s team.

Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children will find the scooters a welcome asset in their busy play centre. Two scooters will also be presented to two deserving little patients who have had an especially long, or distressing, stay in hospital.

Micro Scooters are one of the most popular toys amongst children of all ages so will help young patients in both hospitals feel more like other children. They also provide them with a great way to keep active as some children have to stay on the wards for months.

As well as the scooters, the children will be given ribbons and other accessories for their new fleet.

The Hospital Donation Scheme is ongoing throughout 2011, to find out more visit www.micro-scooters.ie
