TallaghtHospitalcelebrates achievements of research
A research symposium highlighting the research being undertaken at Tallaght Hospital using the funding provided by The Meath Foundation took place in the Hospital’s Education Centre on Friday the 25th of November.
The keynote speaker on the day was Professor A. Peter Passmore, Professor of Aging and Geriatric Medicine at Queens University, Belfast. Professor Passmore, who established the Belfast Memory Clinic, spoke about the causes and effects of Alzheimer’s Disease. A Special Project Grant for research into Alzheimer’s Disease/ Dementia was announced as one of the research grants for 2012.
The symposium provided an opportunity to hear reports of research products funded by The Meath Foundation. In 2009 the Special Project Grant for research into Stroke was awarded to Doctor Ronan Collins for his project:-“The meaning and experience of stroke in young adults: an interpretive phenomenological analysis.” Ms. Dorothy Leahy spoke on behalf of Dr. Ronan Collins about the research.
Also speaking on the day was Dr. Deirdre Ward, Consultant Cardiologist, Tallaght Hospital Sudden Cardiac Death, who received a grant in 2009 for her project- “Sudden Cardiac Death –additional clinical utility of cardiac MRI in family evaluation”. This year Dr. Ward received The Special Award in acknowledgement of her research over the past few years.
Several other previous grant recipients discussed their projects on the day including Dr. David Kane about his project “Osteoporosis – The development of a clinical database and DNA bank at AMNCH”. Professor Colm O’ Morain spoke about his project “Update on the Pilot Colorectal Screening Programme”. While a 2009 grant recipient, a project called “Molecular pharmacological targeting of a viral transforming protein in cervical pre-cancer and cancer’’, was discussed by Dr. Catherine Spillane on behalf of Dr. Niall Swan.
The 2011 Meath Foundation Research Grants were also announced at the event. Grants were awarded to:

Ms. Philippa Ryan Withero, Nurse Practice Development, “A mixed methods evaluation of knowledge and implementation of nursing workforce planning in acute academic teaching hospitals in Ireland”
Professor Thomas Frodl, Consultant Psychiatrist, “Neural and stress correlates of resilience in an exercise-cognitive-behavioural programme”
Dr. Dominick J.H. McCabe, Consultant Neurologist, “HaEmostasis In Carotid Stenosis (HEIST) Study”

Note to the editor: The Meath Hospital was founded in 1753 to provide health care for the poor of Dublin’ Liberties. In 1998, along with the Adelaide and the National Children's Hospital the Meath Hospital moved to the new Hospital at Tallaght now known as The Adelaide & Meath Hospital, Dublin Incorporating the National Children's Hospital. and The Meath Foundation was established as a as successor to the Board of the Meath Hospital. Since 2002 The Foundation has invited applications from members of staff of the Hospital for research in areas of healthcare delivery, including medical, nursing and healthcare management. To date 43 projects have been funded by The Meath Foundation and a total of €1.45 million has been awarded in Research Grants. This funding has increased research output for the benefit of the Hospital and the wider community. The Meath Foundation believes in promoting healthcare research and education within the Hospital and the wider community for the benefit of the community.
