Tallaght First Hospital in Europe to Use New Minimally Invasive Surgical Platform
Tallaght Hospital is the first Hospital in Europe to GelPoint path operating system in minimally invasive surgery.
The Colorectal Rectal minimally invasive surgical unit in the Adelaide and Meath hospital Tallaght under took the first transanal excision of a rectal tumour using the GelPoint path operating system today 23rd September 2011. The operating team consisted of Mr Paul Neary, Mr Nasir Iqbal (colorectal fellow) and Ms Monica Mattias RGN.
The Gel point path operating system is the latest advance in minimally invasive surgery. An increasing number of interventions are minimally invasive, that means without the involvement of hands. Instead, the surgeon makes a small incision through which the instruments and a camera are inserted. Even intestinal tumors can be removed this way. The device inflates the colon and closes it at the same time, so that no air can escape and the instruments have enough moving space. You can see a virtual video demonstration of the platform http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HEDRjEBK7SA.
The Tallaght Hospital colorectal unit has a national reputation for its expertise in the management of rectal tumours using the TEMS operating system (Transanal Endoscopic Microsurgery) and Mr Paul Neary (Consultant Colorectal surgeon) successfully trialled the Gelpoint Path system in the removal of a rectal tumour. He believes that “the GelPoint path operating system represents a further improvement in the minimally invasive approach to colorectal neoplasia. The operating system is a further evolution of single site surgery techniques and its application to rectal neoplasia is indeed novel”.
