Tallaght announced as a candidate colonoscopy centre
AMNCH has been announced as one of the candidate colonoscopy centres by the HSE’S National Cancer Screening Service.
As one of the centres, we will support the colorectal cancer screening programme due to be introduced in 2012. AMNCH has been the leader in the area of cancer screening for a number of years. Over the past two and a half years we have run Ireland’s only bowel cancer screening programme.
The two-year results from that programme highlighted that 192 cancers had been detected. You can read more about the experience of a patient who, by using the home testing kit, discovered she had cancer in this edition of the newsletter.
15 colonoscopy centres have been selected from around the country. Selection of suitable hospitals was based on those best able to handle the additional workload and to ensure an even geographical spread of centres.
900 deaths occur every year as a result of colon cancer.
