Green Light Laser for Treatment of Prostate Cancer in AMNCH
11% of men are diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime and the
Hospital in Tallaght had over 300 prostate cancers diagnosed last year alone.
For this reason, the new greenlight laser, recently acquired by the Hospital to
treat prostate enlargement, is a very welcome development.
Tallaght is the first Irish public hospital in the country to receive the
“greenlight” PVP (Photoselective Vaporization of the Prostate) laser. The laser
is for the treatment of urinary symptoms, associated with benign enlargement, or
lower urinary tract syndrome (LUTS).
Mr Robert Flynn, consultant urologist at the hospital explained that he was one
of four consultants at the hospital trained to use the laser.
The greenlight laser means that instead of surgically cutting out part of the
prostate, or ‘burning’ it like other lasers, the surgeon can vaporises the
tissue.
The greenlight laser also significantly reduces a patient’s stay in Hospital,
sometimes to just overnight, compared to the five days following conventional
surgery. It also reduces bleeding, greatly and lowers the risk of post TUR
syndrome and reduces the risk of erectile dysfunction.
